Controversy on Miss World Uzbekistan

As beauty queens go, Miss Uzbekistan ticks all the boxes.
She’s pretty, sporty, loves to travel, has musical talent and has brains to boot (she says she likes to read Chekhov, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy).

And after she’s competed at the Miss World final in Indonesia later this month, 18-year-old Rakhima Ganieva wants to graduate from university and become a lawyer.

But there is a glaring omission from her perfect CV – Uzbekistan has no idea who she is. The predominantly Muslim country doesn’t even hold a Miss Uzbekistan contest.

Officials at the Uzbek Culture and Sports Ministry and the National Committee on Women said yesterday that anyone laying claim to the nation’s beauty crown was an imposter.

Quite how Miss Ganieva made it to Indonesia has baffled the beauty world, while representatives from the London-based Miss World competition were unavailable for comment yesterday. The Uzbek beauty, who says she is from ‘sunny’ Tashkent, the capital of the central Asian nation, is on the official Miss World website saying: ‘I really want to win.’

Her recent Facebook posts show her posing alongside Miss Georgia, Miss Russia and Miss Ukraine as they prepare for the final on September 28.

But back home, the mysterious Miss Ganieva is upsetting her compatriots.

‘Rakhima Ganieva never passed through any special selection process in Uzbekistan,’ said Zhavlon Komolov, a representative of the Tashkent-based Pro Models modelling agency, where Miss Ganieva briefly trained as a 15-year-old.

‘If there had been a process to choose a young lady for this competition, I can assure you that a much more beautiful model would have been chosen. I’m sorry that Ganieva is choosing to build a career on lies.

Early this morning the Miss World contestants took part in the elimination round of the Sports Challenge! 116 Nations took part in this initial stage, nearly all of the contestants here at Miss World!

Under the careful eye of our fitness experts, the contestants had to perform a selection of four fitness exercises, for 30 seconds per exercise. After each routine, the total number of repetitions were added together giving them a total score. The top 4 from each group were then selected to go through onto tomorrow’s final round of sports events. There was also a reserve from each group selected to stand in incase for any reason one of the select few can not take part in the finals tomorrow.

Miss World finals moved to Bali?

Increasing protest from hard-line groups over the 2013 Miss World beauty pageant – which is slated to be held in Bali and Sentul in West Java from Sept. 8 to 28 – has seemingly forced the government to drop Sentul as one of the event hosts.

Coordinating People’s Welfare Minister Agung Laksono announced that now all of the pageant events, from the opening ceremony to the coronation night, would be held in Bali.

However, contestants, he continued, would be allowed to visit other provinces, but not as part of the program series.

“We take this decision after considering the pros and cons of the event for both the public and the organizer,” Agung said on Saturday.

In the initial schedule, after the first week of events came to an end in Bali, all 129 contestants from around the globe would then travel to Jakarta, where they would compete in different events culminating with the final on Sept. 28 in Sentul at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC).

The contest, however, has drawn protests from Islamic hard-line groups across the country in the days leading up to the pageant. The groups protested the decision to host Miss World in the country, calling it as an "immoral event". The absence of a bikini round in the contest has failed to appease the hard-liners.

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), for instance, has conveyed its disagreement with the event, saying that the pageant was not in line with Islamic teachings. Radical groups the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) and the Islamic People’s Forum (FUI) have also demanded the government cancel the event.

West Java is a Muslim majority province, which is reported to have the highest number of cases of violence against minority religious groups.

The sudden decision shocked the Miss World committee, as it came a few hours after the committee had held a separate press conference in Nusa Dua, Bali, where they expressed their optimism that the event would run smoothly despite mounting protests from hard-liners.

“This is an unexpected decision. Can you imagine it? It’s only three weeks before the finale then suddenly there is such a change,” Arief Suditomo, head of media affairs for the 2013 Miss World,  said.  (koi)

The Miss World Organization is still talking with the Indonesian government but it's likely the final will still push through in Sentul International Convention Center near Jakarta.
